This is not cool.
I don't care what they say, how they argument it, or if they donate 100% of what they make to saving Haiti. It's not cool and not "an interesting contrast". I'm sick of people who think poverty is photogenic.
The only thing that this accomplishes is increasing the numbness that's already out there: you keep seeing images like these and you end up believing that starving to death or not having a roof over your head is normal.

So, no. Not justifiable. You are the media, not artists. Be responsible.

I've met somebody. Her name is Vivian Maier, and I don't know if I should call it love yet, but it's definitely serious.

I found her randomly, -as one usually finds treasures like these- and when I got to look at her work and read her story... I swear I got teared up. She's Arbus-good. Go look. SERIOUSLY. I'm gonna go take some pictures or kill-myself-for-I've-done-nothing-with-my-life... or something, I don't know. Just go and leave me here.

When I saw last spring's collections (specially prada's) I thought "And a Josephine Baker edit in 3, 2..." there was this exercise from Vogue Italia, but I can't say I'm a big fan of the let's get every black model out there and put them together and call it Black Allure... anyways, Tush just did this one with Ellen Von Unwerth and Rose Cordero, who did a pretty decent job as miss Baker.

Estuvo este ejercicio de Vogue Italia, pero no soy muy fan de coger a todas las modelos negras que hay, ponerlas a todas juntas y llamarlo "Black Allure" (un poco de imaginación, hombre), de todas formas, aquí hay uno que hicieron en Tush con Rose Cordero para Ellen Von Unwerth. La verdad es que Rose lo hace bastante bien como La Baker.

Take a look at this editorial by Greg Kadel for Vogue Spain. I've always loved Malgosia Bela, I think she has an amazing face, and I love what they've done with her here. She's very expressive (usually, she's a bit more restrained and cool) the editing is flawless, the styling is VERY va-va-voom-y and the light and colors are very nice and clean. Simple but very nice.

Miren este editorial de Greg Kadel para Vogue España. Siempre me ha gustado Malgosia Bela, creo que tiene una cara increíble, y me ha encantado lo que hicieron con ella aquí. Está súper expresiva (usualmente es mucho más cool y fría) la edición está perfecta, el estilismo va-va-voom-ico (no sé cómo traducirlo, pero creo que se entiende), y la luz y los colores muy bonitos y limpios. Simple pero muy bueno.

If you happen to be in Madrid and have time to spare, I seriously recommend stopping by Fundación Telefónica (Alcalá 31). The "1000 faces / 0 faces / 1 face" exhibition, will be showing the works of Frank Montero (untill very recently unkown), the celebrated Thomas Ruff and Cindy Sherman; the latter being not only a huge name in contemporary photography, but one of my favorite artists and (along with Sophie Calle and Wolfgang Tillmans) part of a threesome who completely changed my views on photography.

So there, go out, sunbathe, drink tintos de verano untill sunset, dance the night away and then go see the show the morning after. Well, that's what I'll be doing anyway. ¡Feliz viernes!

La expo "1000 caras / 0 caras / 1 rostro" mostrará las obras del hasta ahora desconocido Frank Montero, el gran Thomas Ruff y Cindy Sherman. Ésta última no solo es un nombre muy importante en la fotografía contemporánea, pero una de mis artistas favoritas y (junto a Sophie Calle y Wolfgang Tillmans) parte de un trío que cambió por completo mi percepción de la fotografía.

Así que nada, sal a tomar el sol, bebe tintos de verano toda la tarde, baila toda la noche y luego ve a ver la expo al día siguiente. Bueno, eso es lo que planeo hacer yo de todas formas. ¡Feliz viernes!

So, Met & Marcus and Mdme. Alt made this editorial for Vogue Paris, "based" on an editorial Steve Meisel did in 1989 with Linda Evangelista.

I must say it takes guts to try and stand up next to names that big. And the reason it takes guts is because regardless of how good you are it's hard to be somebody else. Had it been an original, the editorial would've been nice, but when you compare it to Meisel's (wich is amazing) it's kinda plain. It's a Sexual vs Sensual kinda thing.

But, don't take my word for it, have a look. To the left, the original, to the right, M&M...&A attempt.

Bueno, pues Met&Marcus y Mdme. Alt hicieron este editorial para Vogue Paris, "basado" en un editorial que Steve Meisel hizo en 1989 con Linda Evangelista.

Tengo que decir que hay que tener valor para ponerse al lado de nombres tan grnades. Y la razón es que no importa lo bueno que seas es difícil ser alguien más. De haber sido un original, este editorial sería bonito, pero si lo comparas con el de Meisel (que es increíble) se queda corto. Es un asunto de Sexualidad vs. Sensualidad.

Yes, what my last post reminded me of: The work of Alexey Brodovitch, who was an amazing art director and made beautiful covers for Harper's Bazaar. Among his studants and collaborators, was the giant, Richard Avedon.

Confession: Sometimes children's editorials spook me out. It's only because the kids in them often look at the camera liker they're 30. Or they're captured with that intention.
However, the other day I recieved this very cool editorial by Esperanza Moya for yo donna and I loved how the kids look adorable and are acting like actual children. Loveley pics.

Confesión: Los editoriales de moda infantil a veces me dan repeluz. Más que nada porque los niños que salen con frecuencia miran a cámara como si tuvieran 30 años. O por lo menos los pillan con esa intención.
De todas formas, el otro día recibí este editorial de Esperanza Moya para yo donna y me encantó que los niños además de ser adorables se ven como niños de verdad. Muy bonitas fotos.

And it could've been epic.

I loved Givenchy's Pre-fall 2011 lookbook.
Not only because I suspect that wearing some of those yummy pieces would make me very happy, but because I LOVED the art direction. They opened the studio door and let the outside be the background. So the light shifted, people passed by, and ordinary life just happened behind gorgeous clothes!

No sólo porque sospecho que ponerme algunas de esas deliciosas prendas me haría muy feliz, sino porque también me ENCANTÓ la dirección de arte. I was introduced by my friend Fernando to the work of Francesca Woodman. Surfing the web looking for images (thank you Internet, the curious people of the world would be miserable without you) I've found not only a beautiful set of work, but an impressive story. Here's a very interesting article I found on her. Please do check her stuff out; she was only alive 22 years, but she certainly gave something to the world while she was in it.

I was recently in Amsterdam (very cool city, y'all) and I went to the Rijksmuseum. It's only showing a portion of the permanent collection because it's being remodeled, but they have the key pieces out. Lucky for me those key pieces include a wonderful Rembrandt collection.

One particular piece killed me.
It's an early self-portrait where he painted his own face in the shadow, while light was coming in from the back. He was just experimenting, painting light like he really perceived it, instead of doing what was a correct representation. This, at the time he did it, was an impressive approach. He was basically painting like a camera.

It was 1628 and he was 22. I've done nothing with my life.

Estuve hace poco en Amsterdam (ciudad muy guay, oigan) y fui al Rijksmuseum. Actualmente sólo esán mostrando una parte de la colección permanente, pero tienen las piezas más importantes expuestas. Por suerte para mí, esas piezas claves incluyen una maravillosa colección de las obras de Rembrandt.

Una pieza en particular me mató.
Es un autoretrato de un joven Rembrandt, donde pintó su propia cara en sombras, mientras la luz venía de detrás. Estaba experimentando, pintando la luz como realmente la percibía, en vez de hacer una representación correcta. Esto, al momento en el que lo hizo, fue una idea impresionante. Básicamente estaba pintando como una cámara.

Era 1628 y el tenía 22 años. No he hecho nada con mi vida.

I recently helped with the birth of a new and delicious place, and am so proud!
Pan con Chocolate is a new must-visit-spot in Madrid, not just because branding is mine :P, but because everything there is amazing! For all of you lucky enough to be in this town, it's in Calle Gravina 3, Chueca Town.

Recientemente asistí al nacimiento de un lugar nuevo y delicioso, ¡y estoy muy orgullosa!

I saw this editorial and was amazed by it. All the christian references in it, you have no idea! As a girl who endured 12 years of catholic school, I immediatley saw some pretty awesome dopplegängers. (I love when I can find the visual references used in an editorial, #imsuchadork) See if you spotted them too:

Vi este editorial y me sorprendió muchísimo. Todas las referencias cristianas que tiene... ¡increíble! Habiendo sobrevivido a 12 años de colegio de monjas, de inmediato vi unos dopplegängers bastante fuertes. (Me encanta cuando puedo encontrar las referencias visuales que se han usado en un editorial #soyunapringá) A ver si las vieron ustedes también:

As a little girl, I had no idea what I looked like. I mean I had NO reference at all, and I had no idea what I was supposed to look like when I grew up either. My mother (the first woman you look at in these cases) is the most beautifulest mommy in the world, but I look nothing like her. Sh'es a little chinese doll, I'm -as Chris Rock said in Rush Hour- blackanese.

I grew up in a country where a woman is supposed to look like she just walked out of the beauty salon ALL THE TIME. And the less black she looks, the better. So I didn't think I was pretty because all the beauty standards I had around me were of gorgeous white women. I think the only black beauty reference I had was Naomi Campbell and yes, WOW, but I did not feel identified.

I don’t mean I didn’t have role models to look up to when it came to brains or character, that has nothing to do with this; I’m just saying I didn’t see girls who I could relate to when it came to looks and style.

I remember wishing I were a redheaded, green-eyed... thing. I also wanted glasses and braces; which is not very lady-like but I was a dork and it was the 90's.

It took me a long, long, loooong time to figure out what I was, and where I fitted in. I eventually realized that the only thing I was supposed to look like was myself, and that hey; I was easy on the eye too.

All this is to say I’m glad to see black models all over the place with different attitudes and vibes going on. Had I had Liya Kebede and her elegance or Rose Cordero and her awesome hair, I might’ve not felt the pressure of having to choose between a long legged bombshell or an R&B diva.

I’m sure a lot of brown and black girls out there will have women to look up to before they figure out they just have to look up to themselves.

De pequeña, no tenía idea de cómo me veía. Quiero decir no tenía referencia ALGUNA de mi aspecto ni de cómo se suponía que iba a ser de mayor. Mi madre (la primera mujer a la que miras en estos casos) es la mamá más bella del mundo mundial, pero no nos parecemos en nada. Ella es una muñequita china y yo soy –como dijo Chris Rock en Rush Hour- chinegra.

Crecí en un país donde una mujer debe lucir como si acabase de salir del salón de belleza TODO EL TIEMPO. Y mientras menos negra se vea, mejor. Así que no creía que era bonita porque todos los estándares de belleza que tenía alrededor eran de mujeres hermosas y blancas. Creo que la única referencia que tenía de belleza negra era Naomi Campbell, y sí, WAO, pero no me sentía identificada.

No quiero decir con esto que no tenía modelos a seguir con respecto a logros personales y carácter, eso no tiene nada que ver con esto; sólo digo que no veía a chicas con las que me pudiese identificar en relación a estilo y aspecto físico.

Recuerdo que quería ser una cosa pelirroja y con los ojos verdes. También quería gafas y braces, que no es muy estiloso, pero yo era lerda y eran los 90.

Me tomó mucho muuucho tiempo darme cuenta de qué era yo, y dónde encajaba. Eventualmente me di cuenta que a lo único que me tenía que parecer era a mi misma, y que eso no estaba nada mal.

En fin, todo esto es para decir que me alegra ver a modelos negras e impresionantes por ahí con diferentes rollos y actitudes. Si hubiese tenido a Liya Kebede y su elegancia o a Rose Cordero y su pelo increíble, a lo mejor no me hubiese sentido presionada a elegir entre ser una bomba sexual de piernas largas o una diva del R&B.

Estoy segura de que muchas niñas marrones y negras por ahí tendrán mujeres a quienes admirar antes de darse cuenta de que sólo tienen que admirarse a si mismas.

One thing you might not know about me (but you do by now): I love jazz.
I love music in general, but jazz holds a very special place in my heart; not only do I love (and am moved by) the music, but because I love the philosophy that surrounds it.

I think Miles summed it up when he said “Don't play what's there, play what's not there”. But I’m not going to get into jazz theory with ya’ll (mostly because almost anybody who knows anything could kick my butt); the reason for this post is to show off a Christmas present I got [been gobbling it up].

Here it is!

I’ve been wanting this book for a while now. The pics are William Claxton’s, whom I got to know because of his Chet Baker photographs, and the text is by Joachim E. Berendt, a musicologist (is that a cool profession or WHAT?). They basically got together in 1960 and for 4 or 5 months traveled around the U.S. documenting the jazz scene of the time.

Yes. Think about it. The ENVY! The people they got to meet, the things they got to see! The music they got to hear! LIVE!

Sorry, I get a little excited.

Anyway. Here are some shots. The book’s been around for a while now (since 1960?), so you’ve probably heard of it. But if you like the Jazz life, I highly recommend it.

Una cosa que puede que no sepan sobre mí (bueno, que ahora ya sí): me encanta el jazz.
Soy una amante de la música en general, pero el jazz guarda un lugar muy especial en mi corazoncito. No sólo porque amo (y me conmueve) la música, pero porque amo la filosofía que la rodea.

Creo que Miles lo resumió cuando dijo “No toques lo que está ahí, toca lo que no está ahí”. Pero no me voy a meter en teoría del jazz (básicamente porque casi cualquiera que sepa dos cosas me puede dar una paliza). La razón de este post es fardar un poco de un regalo de navidad que recibí [lo he estado devorando].

He estado deseando tener este libraco desde hace un tiempo. Las fotos son de William Claxton, a quien conocí por sus fotos de Chet Baker (y que merece un post aparte sólo por eso); y el texto es de Joachim E. Berendt, un musicólogo (¿es ésa una profesión cool o qué?). Básicamente lo que hicieron fue irse juntos en 1960 por 4 o 5 meses por varias ciudades de EE.UU. documentando la escena del jazz de la época.

Bueno. Aquí hay algunas fotinches. El libro ha estado por ahí desde hace un tiempo (desde 1960?), así que probablemente sepas de su existencia. Pero si no, y te gusta el jazz, es altamente recomendable.

They say that a portrait is 60% subject 40% photographer. I think with this woman it was the other way around. Not that she was a freak (nor that she wasn't) It's just that you can see what it was like to be her in every single one of them.

Dicen que un retrato es 60% modelo y 40% fotógrafo. Yo creo que con Diane Arbus era al revés. No que era una freak (ni que no lo era) es sólo que puedes ver perfectamente cómo era ser ella cada una de sus fotos.

Every now and then, out of looking at too many pictures I become sort of numb. I get kinda bored and unimpressed by everything, and even if I'm looking at great work I can't get myself to really appreciate it. It's like when you spend too many hours in a museum.

Enter Vogue Italia, enter Mr. Meisel.

I wake up on monday morning to find this editorial:

My first reaction was, (obviously) Amazing!
But... maaaaybe Has he gone a bit too far? I mean, how can you "make a statment" when you are using a luxury magazine as a vehicle, and the models that you are directing are wearing 5,000$ dresses?

Well, this isn't the first (and won't be the last) time that Meisel uses his position to stirr things up a little.

In 2006, on the fifth anniversary of 9/11, he made State of Emergency, with Hilary Rhoda and Iselin Steiro being harrassed and taken down by law enforcement agents. (Never thought I would say law enforcement agents in this blog...)

And then in 2007, while an increasing number of celecbrities were entering this kind of centers, he made Supermodels go to rehab, a surprising and strong editorial that showed, well, supermodles going to rehab.

These are both, though strong editorials, not as strong as the Water and Oil one. Mostly because now he's talking about something that is more important than politics or celebrities and their bad habits. He's making models pose like dead birds when images of actual dead birds on shore are uncomfortably fresh. He's mixing the shallow world of fashion with something so serious that affects not only enviromental balance but the health and lifestyle of everyone around it. So has he, gone too far? I don't think so.

I understand it's hard not to judge. I did. The fashion world is regarded as a vain one, and the general audience finds it hard giving the proffessionals who work in it more than one dimension. I'ts hard to give them permission to have a valid opinion or even a conscience.

But these are his tools. If he felt compelled to say something, to maybe try and make a difference, what else would he use? If you could reach millions of people and for one second, make them question themselves about what's going on, or even proof YOU wrong, wouldn't you?

De vez en cuando, de tanto mirar fotos, me quedo medio anestesiada. Me aburro y cuesta que me impresionen las cosas, e incluso si stoy viendo trabajo realmente bueno, no logro apreciarlo realmente. Es como cuando pasas demasiadas horas en un museo.

Entra Vogue Italia, entra Mr. Meisel.

Me levanté el lunes en la mañana para encontrarme con este editorial: (Water and Oil, Vogue Italia, august 2010)

Mi primera reacción fue (obviamente) Increíble!
Pero... quizás se ha pasado un poco? Quiero decir, como puedes "hacer una declaración" cuando estás usando una revista de lujo como medio y las modelos que diriges llevan vestidos de 5,000$?

Bueno, ésta no es la primera vez (y no será la última) que el Meisel usa su posición para causar un poco de revuelo.

En 2006, para el quinto aniversario de S11, hizo State of Emergency, con Hilary Rhoda y Iselin Steiro siendo acosadas y arrestadas por agntes de la ley. (Jamás pensé que iba a escribir "agentes de la ley" en este blog) (State of Emergency, Vogue Italia, Sept. 2006)

Luego en 2007, mientras un número considerable de celebrities ingresaban en centros, hizo Supermodels go to Rehab, un editorial sorprendente en donde mostraba, bueno, a supermodelos en un centro de rehailitación. (Supermodels go to rehab, Vogue Italia, July 2007)

Estos editoriales, aunque fuertes, no son tan chocantes como Water and Oil. Principalmente porque ahora está tocando un tema mucho más importante que la política de un país o los malos hábitos de las celebrities. Está haciendo que modelos posen como pájaros muertos cuando las imágenes de pájaros muertos están desagradablemente frescas. Ha mezclando el mundo superficial de la moda con algo tan serio como un desastre que afecta además del equilibrio ambiental a la salud y estilo de vida de los residentes de la zona. Asi que, se ha pasado? Yo creo que no.

Entiendo que es difícil no juzgar. Yo lo hice. El mundo de la moda está visto como uno vacuo, y al público en general le resulta difícil darle más de una dimensión a los profesionales que trabajan en él. Es difícil permitirles tener una opinión válida, y mucho menos una conciencia.

Pero éstas son sus herramientas. En caso de sentirse obligado a decir algo, de tal vez intentar hacer que cambie algo, ¿qué otro medio usaría? Si pudieses alcanzar a millones de personas por un momento, y hacer que se cuestionen lo que está pasando, o incluso que discutan y griten hasta que te demuestren equivocado, ¿no lo harías?

Yo tengo un blog, el tiene Vogue Italia. Más menos...

But use that with a model that can change facial expressions by moving but one muscle, a photographer who knows what he's doing, and add a detail of movement to an otherwise static and bold image, and you got a standout campaign.

Les presento el poder de lo simple. Un fondo neutro de estudio, piezas básicas y una luz limpia y uniforme.

Pero usa eso con una modelo que cambia de expresión moviendo solo un músculo de la cara, un fotógrafo que sabe lo que está haciendo, agrégale un detalle de movimiento a una imagen por lo demás completamente estática y obtienes una campaña sobresaliente.

Never been a big fan of Testino or Versace, but looking a this pictures you realize why they are who they are. Wether I like it or not, this is a rocking campaign and I wanna look this cool.

8 Loewe
The first time I saw this campaign I didn't know what to think. I had only found the pictures on the right, and coming from Loewe, who've never been prone to this kind of images I was surprised.

Then I found the complete layout and looked into the photographer, Nigel Shafran, and decided I loved it.

It's incredibly fresh, specially considering that this brand isn't known for being avant garde. This diptychs could very well be on the walls of a contemporary art gallery.

La primera vez que vi esta campaña no supe que pensar. Sólo había encontrado las imágenes de la derecha, y viniendo de Loewe, que nunca ha sido muy de este tipo de campañas, me sorprendió.

Luego encontré el layout completo y vi el trabajo previo del fotógrafo, Nigel Shafran, y decidí que me encantaba.

Es increíblemente fresco, especialmente considerando que esta marca no es conocida por ser avant garde. Estos dípticos podrían estar colgados en las paredes de una galería de arte contemporáneo perfectamente.

This is all Paolo Roversi. He rocks. I'm such a fan. This man works old school; with available light and HMI lights (that means he doesn't use flashes, but continuous light, like they do when filming movies) also, he uses a plate camera. Don't get me started, I'll go geek on you.

The thing is: I love this. It's like it was made in the 1850's. The mirrors, the fabric on the floor... it's an homage to early photography, so of course I drool.

Esto es todo Paolo Roversi. Es impresionante, soy muy fan. Este hombre trabaja a lo old school; con luz ambiental y luces HMI (o sea que no usa flashes, sino luz continua, como las que usan para filmar pelis) además tiene una cámara de placas de gran fomato. No me tienten, que me pongo friki.

La cuestión: Me encanta. Parece que la hubieran hecho en los 1850's. Los espejos, la tela en el suelo... es un homenaje a las primeras etapas de la fotografía, con lo cual babeo inevitablemente.

1 Calvin Klein Collection

I grew up in the 90's. That means I like my men grungy and my Calvin Klein cool. So when I saw the FW campaign for Calvin Klein collection I got that feeling you get in your gut when you see Paul Newman and Robert Redford together.

This is very clean but there's so much going on. It's a perfect example of a campaign where the model, the photographer and the creative have a crucial role in the process, and if any of them had been replaced, the outcome would've never been this good.

Lara Stone by Met&Marcus

Crecí en los 90. Eso quiere decir que a los chicos los prefiero grungy y a Calvin Klein cool. Así que cuando vi la campaña de Calvin Klein Collection tuve la misma sensación que te da en la boca del estómago cuando ves a Paul Newman y a Robert Redford juntos.

Estas son imágenes muy limpias, pero ¡hay tanto contenido ahí dentro! Es un ejemplo perfecto de como en una campaña la modelo, el fotógrafo y el creativo tienen un papel crucial, y si alguno hubiese sido reemplazado, el resultado no jamás hubiese sido el mismo.

My mother collects books and magazines like a crazy person. When I was little, I remember I would eat them up. One of the magazines she brought home one time, was a special issue dedicated to a painter I'd never heard about, and have hardly ever heard mention since. Still, I never forgot her name: Remedios Varo.

The images in this magazine were amazing: the colors and the use of light and shadows were beautiful; but what really got to me, was the story each painting told. It was like being in a dream, like being inside HER dreams.

I find her paintings really inspiring, and keep her in my reference drawer.

Mi madre colecciona libros y revistas como una loca. Cuando yo era pequeña, recuerdo que los devoraba todos. Una de las revistas que trajo a casa una vez, era un suplemento dedicado a la vida y obra de una pintura cuyo nombre nunca había escuchado, y que apenas he vuelto a escuchar desde entonces. Aún así, nunca lo olvidé: Remedios Varo.

Las imágenes de esa revista eran increíbles: los colores y el uso de los claroscuros eran impresionantes; pero lo que realmente me llegó, fueron las historias que cada pintura contaba. Era como estar en un sueño, como estar dentro de SUS sueños.

Sus pinturas son realmente inspiradoras, siempre las tengo guardadas en mi cajón de referencias.

I know this isn't a fashion blog really, buuuuut... last weekend I went to Bilbao, and stopped by to see a Balenciaga expo that's currently at Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao (go if you can, I liked it), and among other great pieces, I found THIS beauty:

Chet Baker was God.

Not only did he master the trumpet; which led him to gain the respect of the greatest jazz legends, but he had a few other enviable gifts: a smooth voice, impeccable style and the face of a Hollywood star.

This made him irresistible to photographers, (like legendary jazz photographer William Claxton*), and they followed him around documenting his every move.

As a result, before his way of life killed his beauty, Chet left us thousands of iconic images, [amazing music aside, of course] that tell the story not only of an extraordinary man, but of a time when jazz more than a music genre, was a way of life.

Well. Considering how I feel about this man, I don't know how this post didn't make it here faster.

I think I've said it before, but I don't mind getting repetitive about this: Art should be visceral. VISCERAL. What a word! And how Guy Bourdin made it happen! Just look at his work, and at how the images are obvious but intriguing, how you maybe don't know what they mean but you can feel it... yes. Intention. Honesty. The look works for me I don't work for the look. This man was awesome and he knew what he was not doing. I can say no more.

Bueno. Considerando cómo me siento respecto a este hombre, no sé como no había publicado este post antes.

Creo que lo he dicho ya, peor no me importa ponerme repetitiva con el asunto: el arte debe ser visceral. VISCERAL. ¡Qué palabra! Y cómo la lograba Guy Bourdin! Sólo miren su trabajo, como las imágenes son obvias, pero intrigantes, cómo tal vez no sabes lo que significan pero puedes sentirlo... sí. Intención. Honestidad. La imagen trabaja para mi, yo no trabajo para la imagen. Este hombre era increíble y sabía lo que hacía. No digo más.

Don't know who's doing this for Raf Simons, but it's amazing. In fashion campaigns there's so much unexplored territoire: it doesn't need all the elements regular publicity needs and it's target understands things that are visceral and abstract immediatley. Barvo to the team and creatives behind this!

When I travel I never take regular pictures. It's funny when people ask to see them later, because they're rarley what's expected... they're random and sometimes are pictures of nothing.
I don't mind... there's enough propper images of the Eiffel tower out there.

Terry Richardson, for next month's V magazine, has made an editorial that's gonna have people talking A LOT. Placing slim Jacquelyn Jablonski and curvylicious Crystal Renn next to each other with the exact same styling, and saying "One size fits all". This is one step towards not having standards, and just having plain old hotness.

About time.

I must say. I like this. It's refreshing to see models looking happy and having fun in front of the camera.

The concept of a shoot obviously determines the expressions of the models in it, but when most of them right now are about sex and "u can't touch this" or “darling, look like you’re confused”, I find it beautifully refreshing to see editorials where there’s beautiful people just not taking it all too seriously.

Beautiful can be a party and we all like a party.

In photography, there’s technique, and then there’s intention.

Regarding intention, one of my photography teachers, said one time "Photographers are either hunters or gatherers". This means that you either make an image happen, one you have in your head [or in your gut] already, and take a picture; or you go out and capture images made out of reality.

From the moment he said it, I couldn't stop classifying every photographer I saw as one or the other.

I think the clearest examples I can think of, are two men who changed the way the next generations of hunters and gatherers hunted and gathered.

The hunter, was the man who came up with the term "the decisive moment" and based his whole work in the beauty of every day people, and their everyday life: Henry Cartier Bresson.

The gatherer was a man who pictured passion. I don’t know how else to describe it. He’s pictures were honest and raw, but sophisticated. They were sex and sensuality at the same time. What an accomplishment, Señor Helmut Newton!

En la fotografía, está la técnica y luego la intención.

Con respecto a la intención, uno de mis profesores de fotografía, dijo una vez “Los fotógrafos son cazadores o recolectores”. Es decir, o construyes una imagen que llevas ya en la cabeza (o en las entrañas), o sales a capturar imágenes hechas de realidad.

Desde el momento en que lo dijo, no he podido dejar de clasificar cada fotógrafo que veo como uno u otro.

Creo que los ejemplos más claros en los que puedo pensar son dos hombres que cambiaron la forma en la que las generaciones siguientes de cazadores y recolectores cazaban y recolectaban.

El cazador, fue el hombre que creó el término “el momento decisivo” y basó todo su trabajo en la belleza de lo cotidiano: Henry Cartier Bresson.

El recolector fue un hombre que fotografió la pasión. No se cómo describirlo, la verdad. Sus fotos son honestas y crudas, pero al mismo tiempo sofisticadas. Eran sexo y sensualidad al mismo tiempo. ¡Qué logro, Mister Helmut Newton!

Well, it's out. One of the projects I've been working on (as an art director, not a photographer) is the ss2010 campaign images for Pedro del Hierro; and they're finally done. The model is Michelle Buswell, who's not only gorgeous but very nice and easy to work with. The photos are by Gyslain Yarhi, who's a pro and took my improper jokes about him being french with very good humor.

Anyways, here's a couple of 'em.

Bueno, ya está. Uno de los proyectos en los que estaba trabajando (como directora de arte, no como fotógrafa) era la campaña de imagen de ss2010 de Pedro del Hierro; y finalmente está hecha. La modelo es Michelle Buswell, que además de bella es muy simpática e hizo el trabajo muy fácil. Las fotos son de Gyslain Yarhi, que es un pro y se tomó mis chistes inapropiados sobre los franceses con muy buen humor.

Every now and then, I run into a photographer that makes me remember what I love about photography. The other day I found Mikkel Bache on the Behance Network, and I was impressed, really. His portraits are natural, and clean, but never plain or dull. There's always a story, a great expression or beautiful framing to them.

I need to go get my camera, I feel like making some pictures.

De vez en cuando, me encuentro con un fotógrafo que me hace recordar lo que me gusta de la fotografía. El otro día me encontré con Mikkel Bache en el Behance Network, y me impresionó bastante, de verdad. Sus retratos son naturales, y limpios, pero nunca planos. Siempre hay una historia, una expresión o un encuadre increíble.

So, I was thinking that I should talk to you about some photographers I've actually had the pleasure of working with. Not only because I got to see the magic first hand, but because I've met a lot of photographers that don't get the props they oughta.

Back when I was an assistant at Centro Studios, I got to work with this really cool (and when I say cool I mean coowl) photographer called Rafa Gallar. He has an awsome sense of light and composition, and this edgy urban style, that comes across even when his doing glamorous and classy things. Also, I love the way he just puts two images together, it's like he makes a diptic in a magazine double-spread. Anyway, look, look him up, spread the word.

Bueno, he estado pensando que debería hablarles un poco acerca de algunos fotógrafos con los cuales he tenido el placer de trabajar directamente por una razón u otra. No sólo porque pude ver en primera fila la magia, pero porque he conocido a muchos fotógrafos que no reciben el crédito que deberían.

Cuando estaba trabajando de asistente en Centro Studios, pude trabajar con un fotógrafo muy cool, (y cuando digo cool, digo coowl [esto no hay forma de traducirlo, lo siento]) llamado Rafa Gallar. Tiene un sentido genial de la luz y la composición, y un estilo muy urban que se nota incluso cuando hace cosas más clasicas y glamourosas. Además siempre me ha gustado la forma en la que une dos imágenes, es casi como si armara un díptico en una doble página. Bueno, ya está. Miren, búsquenlo y rieguen la voz.

I learned about this photographer by chance. Shortly after I first got to Madrid, the Telefónica Foundation made a retrospective of his work. I was impressed by his images and the way he worked with the light. All this aside from the natural fascination some of us have with old pictures.

But then I looked into his story a bit. He was indigenous. At the end of the 19th century that was not an easy thing to be. It's not an easy thing to be now. Still, he managed not only to become a photographer, but to actually get acknowledged.

I've always thought that when a photographer takes a picture, he comes trough it. You can tell who he is and where he comes from, and what his intentions are. Given the background Chambí had, his pictures have a quality not easy to find in other photographs taken in his time.

He took the photograph of relevant and rich folks, the ones who could afford having their picture taken... and then he captured the other side of his reality: the one he had come from. The idigenous, the poor, the illiterate, the people who no one had known existed if it weren't for the fact that they were captured by Chambí. To a point, I think he ended up relating to both worlds, but not feeling like he belonged in either.

Anyway, check him out.

I bumped into Dash Snow while blog surfing. I looked him up and found a very interesting body of work, but even better, I was link-after-linked to the work of his friend Ryan McGinley. I'm pretty much in love.

His work is clean, and beautiful... a bit perverse, but like a little kid would be perverse. I think it's what Neverland would look like.
